Let us help you create a meaningful and dignified farewell for your loved one that honours Taoist traditions while offering personalised care.
A Taoist funeral is typically held at a funeral parlour, void deck, or community space. The cost of a Taoist funeral package in Singapore varies depending on the chosen venue.
The duration of a Taoist funeral service depends on the wishes of the deceased or family and the scale of the wake, usually lasting 3 to 7 days. Services are typically held over an odd number of days, with customs varying by family dialect.
Priests start the funeral by chanting Taoist scriptures, accompanied by drums and cymbals. Throughout the service, chanting rituals are performed to guide the deceased’s spirit, separate it from the living, and seek forgiveness from deities.
Taoist funerals feature an altar with the deceased’s portrait, joss sticks, and candles for prayers. Favourite meals of the departed are offered as well. Mourners are encouraged to express their grief openly and burn joss papers shaped like luxury items for the afterlife.
After everyone pays their respects, the coffin is nailed shut, viewing this is forbidden. White and yellow papers are then attached, and the coffin will be transported to the cremation site to be cremated.
Taoism restricts certain behaviours during and after funerals to avoid negative consequences. For example, dressing the deceased in red is forbidden, as it is believed to cause the soul to return as a ghost.
Mirrors are also prohibited near the coffin, since seeing the coffin’s reflection is thought to bring death to the family.
A plain white envelope containing money is a traditional and widely accepted condolence gift at Taoist funerals in Singapore. While guests can give it directly to the family during the service, many funerals now provide a sympathy box at the welcome table for cash donations, which help cover funeral expenses.
Flower wreaths featuring lilies, daisies, roses, and chrysanthemums are also commonly offered as a gesture of sympathy.
The attire of the deceased’s family depends on the dialect group. Our funeral director will guide accordingly.
Guests attending a Taoist funeral in Singapore are advised to dress respectfully in neutral colours such as black or white.
Following the burial or cremation, the family may hold a funeral feast to express their gratitude to all who came to pay respects to their loved one. One seat will be designated for the deceased during the feast.
At Taoist funerals, openly expressing grief through crying is encouraged, as it symbolizes love and respect for the departed. After the funeral, the family observes a 49-day mourning period, with prayers held every seven days.
